Guatemala is called the land of eternal Spring, the beautiful weather here makes it evident as to where the name comes from. The majestic mountains overlook a city bustling with streets flowing with love and kindness. You can truly see his heart in so many of the people here. God’s favor rests on the Guatemalans and I am so excited to learn from them and their faith in these next two months. ⅓ of Guatemala’s population is under the age of 15.
We will be partnering with a ministry called Reindom in Sumpango, Guatemala. Their goal is to connect hearts, create spaces and manifest God’s kingdom on Earth. The three pillars they stand by are intimacy, kingdom and maranatha. Maranatha is a cry for the Lord to come and the belief in His promised return. Practically, we will be helping run feeding programs, bible studies, teaching English and carrying the love of Jesus to local children. ⅓ of Guatemala’s population is under the age of 15!
We will also be partnering with Mesa del Reino. Their vision is to invite children, widows and alcoholics to a meal at the king’s table. Together we will feed bodies and souls.
On Sunday we were invited to participate in a torch run with the children from Reindom to celebrate Guatemala’s Independence Day. Guatemala was freed from Spanish rule in 1821. A unique tradition that kicks off the festivities involves runners carrying a symbolic torch, known as the Independence Torch. It is lit in Guatemala City and then carried throughout the country, passing through various towns and cities. This torch symbolizes the unity of the Guatemalan people in their fight for independence. The kids got to carry the torch, flags and horns as we ran for about three hours. As we ran through the mountains people honked and threw bags of water at us. As we ran through the streets of the city, it came alive with people spraying, pouring and throwing water at us from all directions. The buildings were adorned with beautiful blue and white flags that blew in the crisp spring breeze. Patriotic songs played by live bands filled the streets. The holiday is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and a celebration of the rich culture of Guatemala. I was so honored to be a part of this beautiful tradition and such a fun way to be introduced to the children we will be serving.
God is truly moving in Guatemala and many ministries here have the goal of discipling Guatemalans and sending them out to the 10/40 window. The 10/40 window is an area of the world between 10 degrees north and 40 degrees north latitude. This region of the world is unreached by the message of the gospel. You can read more about it here https://joshuaproject.net/resources/articles/10_40_window. Biblical prophecy states that the gospel must reach all of the world before Jesus returns. Many Guatemalans have received prompting from the Holy Spirit to spread the gospel to these unreached places to prepare for Christ’s coming.
